Your favorite cultural trait that diffused to the USA from somewhere else...

Your assignment, worth 5 points, and due by 11:59pm on 9/11, is to comment to this post by doing the following:
1) put your first name, last initial, and class period
2) write what your favorite cultural trait in the USA is that diffused to the USA from somewhere else
3) tell where that trait came from, and when it came to the USA
4) explain why it is your favorite cultural trait that diffused to the USA from somewhere else

For example:
1) Mr. H, 1st hour
2) the name "America"
3) from Germany around 1507
4) We, in the USA, love to call ourselves "America."  What's cool is that "America" actually refers to all of the Americas (North, South, Central), and is named after Amerigo Vespucci, an Italian explorer who figured out that Columbus hadn't "discovered" Asia, but had bumped into some continents (the Americas) that Europeans did not know about.  A German mapmaker (Martin Waldseemüller) was honoring Vespucci by naming these "new" lands "America" after Vespucci, instead of naming the lands after Columbus, who thought he was in Asia.  If Columbus had figured things out better and spread the word more, we in the USA would probably be living in the USC, and we would be calling ourselves "Columbians" nowadays instead of "Americans"!  Now, if that isn't cool, I don't know what is!!!

Helpful Hints (you should see you comment post right away...if not, try these steps):
A. copy your comment before you hit Publish ... just in case it doesn't work the first time
B. go through the process to convince the blog you are NOT a robot
C. comment as "Anonymous" if things don't work the first time
D. hope for the best...or talk with Mr. H BEFORE this is due!
Good luck!
